Dot is not just a side table. It is an invitation. A multiple experience. First of all, the eye is mesmerised by the material. Matt, shiny, two-tone patina, eggshell or marble, it doesn't matter what the variation is, as long as there is lacquer. Made by hand, it is a tribute to Asian know-how and to the patience that beauty implies. More than 18 layers are needed to bring out the colour. Available in sixteen shades, Dot is not a side table, it is an icon.
The eggshell used for DOT is actually the shell of a duck's egg, which produces crackled whites with a very subtle and spectacular effect. The shell is washed, stripped of inner skins, crushed and finally sieved to separate the sizes. Each of these tiny particles is then placed, with the help of a pair of tongs, on a layer of fresh lacquer. They are then sanded and between 18 and 21 coats of lacquer are applied to achieve a smooth surface. The last coat of clear lacquer covers the gaps. Depending on the desired effect, the cover lacquer can be amber or black, which also gives very beautiful shades. The brown eggshell is the result of a roasting process and not due to the application of a lacquer.
